December 29: Morning fun for the Birthday Girl!

Today was Cedar's first birthday - hard to believe she's been with us for 10 months already! We decided to visit a regional park that other dog people have talked about. Of course we chose the day with hurricane force winds and blowing snow on the highway to head up there, very smart of us.

Park Lake is about 20 mins drive north of town, and isn't really a 'lake' by non-Alberta standards. It's an irrigation pond, and a popular (?) hangout in summer. In winter it's completely deserted.

Park Lake in winter. Lots of cattails. Very windy.

Cedar was amped from the minute we got in the car. Whining all the way, poking at the window. She didn't even know where we were going but figured it must be fun because it was her BIRTHDAY! Maybe it was her pink bandanna, a Christmas present from Oma, that made her crazy.

I may look tired, but I'm really crazy. Let's play let's play!

Mmmmm that toy looks tasty...

Luckily we'd brought one of her Christmas presents - the black Kong frisbee.

Yee haw!

OMG I can't see!

It was all fun and games until the frisbee got stuck on a tree branch (wind + piddly frisbee = whammo into a tree).

Please can you get my toy out of the tree? Pretty please?

How about if I lie down? Will that make you get it out of the tree??

Yes you got it! I can be stupid again!

The wind made all sorts of noises in the tree branches. Someone is particularly alert to noise...might not be so great for a hunting dog!

I heard something. Could be a coyote. Coming to steal my frisbee.

Don't tell me you didn't hear that. I know there's something around here, trying to creep up behind me...

Maybe it's coming from the other side. It can't fool me, I know there's something out there.
Just the wind rustling through the cattails Cedar! No coyotes in sight in this tiny park.

Well in that case it's safe to have a quick roll in the snow.

What're you looking at? Yeah it's a pink bandanna, so? Don't make me go all crazy on your ass!

Do we have to go home? Yes Cedar, not everyone likes prancing around in a -50C wind chill like you do.

Home sweet home. I'm exhausted (but don't want to admit it). Time to chill out in my bed.

All in all a great birthday morning. Thanks Jan & Anna for this litter of pups that has brought so much love to each of their nine owners.

Coming up next...PREZZIES!

  1. How pretty Cedar looks in her pink bandanna!
So happy with this litter and their lovely owners who keep us up to date as we like.
Due credit goes to Anna as she fell in love with Torin and we liked and trusted her.
Hard decision but one we are glad we made.
Happy Birthday to a lovely character who we love to read about and such gorgeous photos.xx

  2. To avoid you a bad surprise, off-leash dogs are not allowed in provincial parks. Conservation officiers were at Park Lake yesterday giving fines to dog owners and fish poachers.

    1. Thanks Anyonymous. Guess that was our first - and last - visit to Park Lake. Doesn't leave a lot of options given the dog parks are full of poo that people don't pick up.
